Take a Kneel

In Eduardo Lara’s “ Blog Stage 5 ” he discusses the recent media attention surrounding the current backlash NFL players who have taken a knee during the national anthem have received. Citizens and even Donald Trump have taken to social media to share their outrage about the so called grievous disgrace the players who participated showed towards the nation. He goes on to discuss how these players have received threats from their organizations, their fans, and even their president. I agree with his belief that these player, who are simply expressing their freedom of expression, are being wrongfully mistreated.  By choosing to kneel during the anthem these players are not disrespecting the United States, rather they are simply choosing to express their respect in a different manner, while making a statement about the current status of our nation. This right is protected under the first amendment which guarantees our freedom of religion and speech. This freedom has been protected time

Goodbye Creepy White Men

It seems that todays headlines are flooded with either a new trump atrocity or another Hollywood sexual abuse scandal. Hollywood has always been a breeding ground for fowl behavior and it should be no surprise that even so called “high-profile” Hollywood is riddled with sexual assault. Recently there has been a large amount of revelations about the misconduct of quite a few of Hollywood and other industry elite such as, Harvey Weinstein, Louis CK, Kevin Spacey, and Matt Lauer.  In the beginning of October multiple women came forward accusing Harvey Weinstein, a Hollywood producer, of sexual misconduct. The immensely negative reaction the public had towards his actions acted as a catalyst for exposing an exponential amount of more high-profile men accused of sexual misconduct. Hopefully we will continue see the bad seeds be weeded out. As society continues to grow and accept the truth and reality that sexual harassment is everywhere more and more people are going to feel safe e

Legalize It

In the article " Legalizing Marijuana Under Federal Law for a Prosperous Economy " written by my fellow classmate Austin Smith he discusses the current status of marijuana legalization and the issues faced by the fact that cannabis is still illegal under federal law. Austin touches on key factors like the fact that many banks still won't accept profits from legal marijuana shops and that congress has failed to make any major changes to legislation to decriminalize cannabis. Public support for marijuana legalization is at an all time high with just over sixty percent of Americans in favor of legalizing cannabis use. With such a large majority of US citizens endorsing legalizing marijuana there seems to be little to no changes being made to decriminalize its status. The benefits of legalizing pot, providing more jobs, increasing net growth in the economy, less misdemeanor drug offenders in prison, and the many medicinal properties many people rely on marijuana for, highly o

Are Guns the New God?

If growing up in Texas has taught me anything it’s that Americans, especially the South, love their guns. Not only do we love our constitutionally given freedom to bear arms but we take pride in it. We host gun shows, and take our families to the shooting ranges. Guns have become venerated in this country. They are the new religion. We are no longer “one nation under God”, we now stand united as “one nation, under guns”.  The United States owns about half the entire world’s gun supply while only taking up about 5% of its population, that means there’s about one gun per every citizen of the us. Gun owners purchase their firearms for varying reasons such as for protection or for collecting, but the issue is with people who purchase firearms with the intention of harming others. Not surprisingly our nation leading the world in gun ownership correlates to its citizens being 10 times more likely to be killed by guns than people in other developed countries. This shouldn’t come as a

The "New Alt" is doing Al(t)right

I chose to read “The Periscope that shows how there’s no difference between the “new right” and “alt-right”” by Cristina López on Media Matters: https://www.mediamatters.org/blog/2017/10/19/periscope-shows-how-theres-no-difference-between-new-right-and-alt-right/218272 The article is intended for left-winged readers as it discusses many issues caused by the alt-right. The writer is very credible and provides substantial evidence to support her claims. The article discusses an hour and a half livestream broadcast on Periscope, that took place on October 18, entitled “Alt-Right vs New Right, Debate Of The Century”. The broadcast was hosted by Lucian Wintrich, a White House correspondent for the pro-Trump Gateway Pundit, and features “new-right” personality Ali Akbar, and Matt Colligan who was a participant of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, VA. They purpose of the broadcast was to have an honest exchange of ideas and claimed: “We’re not going to be mean. We’re n

Special Operation Forces not so Special Anymore

I read the article: "Special Operation Forces Should not be Americas' Band-Aid" on CNN, by Gayle Lemmon: http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/06/opinions/special-operations-forces-lemmon-opinion/index.html. She discusses the deployment of special operations troops throughout the world and argues that special op forces are not the end all be all of military solutions. The article is directed towards more left-winged readers interested in foreign military procedures and the war on terror. The author seems credible and provides sufficient evidence to support her claims. While special operation forces have been the overseas military tactic of choice since the aftermath of Iraq, and understandably so, we have started using them as a crutch. While this method has been more affective than large scale deployments it is beginning to lose its efficacy. The leader of special operations command has recently spoken out claiming that " We are not the ultimate solution for every problem,  W

Presidential Cyberbullying

CNN posted the article:  North Korea could test hydrogen bomb over Pacific Ocean, says foreign minister   on Friday September 22nd.  The articles discusses President Trump's and  North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un's, recent online tiff. Much like high school girls both national leaders recently issued statements online that scalped each other. At a recent  UN General Assembly on Tuesday Trump made a speech in which he  threatened to"totally destroy" North Korea. In an unprecedented response  Kim released a televised statement saying that Trump would "pay dearly" for the threats, and that North Korea "will consider with seriousness exercising of a corresponding, highest level of hard-line countermeasure in history." He goes on to  state  "I will surely and definitely tame the mentally  deranged US dotard with fire ."  Moments later after deliberating his speech  Kim's foreign minister told reporters in New York that Pyongyang could launc
